WHAT IS WASHER?
Washer is generally used to distribute the load of a treaded fastener (bolt or nut). In addition, washer can be used as a spacer, to reduce vibration and to provide insulation etc. Flat washer or plain washer are the most common type of washer. In contrast, lock washer or tab washer is a special type of washer that is used to prevent fastening or loosening.
WHAT IS GASKET?
On the other hand, gasket is generally used to seal two surfaces, to prevent leakage of liquid/gas.
SO WHICH DO I USE? WASHER OR GASKET?
While washer and gasket may look similar, they are designed for different functions. However, depending on the material used, and the function being used for, washer may perform as a gasket (and vice versa).
